Hetal J. Doshi Recognized with 2018 Davis Award
Hetal J. Doshi was honored last night with the 2018 Richard Marden Davis Award at a dinner in her honor. The award recognizes her outstanding service to the legal community, along with her civic and charitable leadership.
The Davis Award is presented annually “to a Denver lawyer who is 40 years old or younger and combines excellence as a lawyer with civic, cultural, educational, and charitable leadership.” The award was created in memory of Richard Marden Davis, one of the founders of Davis Graham & Stubbs LLP, who devoted himself tirelessly to the profession and the community. Each honoree “best exemplifies the character and promise of Richard Davis at that stage in his career.” Ms. Doshi follows a long line of past winners who have continued to serve the Denver legal community.
“Hetal is a rare individual whose dynamism as a lawyer and humility as a leader make her an inspiration to us all,” said Chad Williams, DGS co-managing partner. “We are delighted to recognize her with the Davis Award and wish her every continued success with her many endeavors.”
Ms. Doshi, a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law and Emory University, is currently an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Economic Crimes Section of the Criminal Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado. While her work primarily focuses on complex financial crimes, including those arising from the use of virtual currency, a topic on which she is often asked to present, she also has experience with the prosecution of a range of violent crimes. One of her most notable achievements since joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office in 2014 has been her devastatingly effective investigations of large, global investment banks for their role in the 2008 financial crisis. Her work on these investigations has yielded billions of dollars of penalties, including one settlement in excess of $5 billion, which constitutes one of the largest civil penalties in the history of the Department of Justice.
In addition to her government service, Ms. Doshi spent several years in private practice, where she represented Silicon Valley startups in trade secret appropriations matters and advised companies being investigated by the Department of Justice for violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and other crimes. In 2011, after working for several years at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, LLP in New York City and Alston & Bird LLP in Atlanta, she moved to Kenya to take on an international public service legal role. There, she volunteered as an advisor to the Kenyan Parliament and a consortium of East African non-governmental organizations regarding prospective devolution and finance legislation, as well the impact of Kenya’s then newly adopted constitution on economic rights advocacy. When she joined Faegre Baker Daniels LLP in Denver in 2012, she immediately established herself as a rising star in the firm’s Colorado litigation practice, where she focused on class action and consumer protection disputes and took on substantial pro bono engagements.
Throughout her career spanning work in government, private practice, and public interest positions, Ms. Doshi has demonstrated significant involvement in the Denver community and beyond. She has been a leader in concerted efforts to address hate crimes, prevent extremism, and support civil rights. She has worked to develop CLEs for the South Asian Bar Association and is a member of the Colorado Women’s Bar Association and the Asian Pacific American Bar Association. Additionally, Ms. Doshi serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Faculty of Federal Advocates and has been appointed by the Colorado Supreme Court to the Attorney Regulation Committee. In 2017, she organized a hate crimes forum, which focused on municipal, state, and federal approaches to hate crimes enforcement. She routinely works with community organizations to support efforts relating to safety in houses of worship and volunteers in elementary schools to help curtail gang recruitment. Ms. Doshi, a recipient of the Harry S. Truman Scholarship, now also serves on the scholarship’s Regional Selection Panel for the mountain states and has been selected as a Truman Governance Fellow. Regardless of where she has lived and worked, Ms. Doshi has been committed to employing her skills for the greater good and to promoting a more just society.
