To retain the talented lawyers we recruit, we work hard to provide them with the resources, experience, and support necessary to succeed – from an attorney’s first day at the firm. Here are some of the initiatives we assist attorneys with in furthering their professional development and career satisfaction:
Comprised of two associates per department, the Associate Committee provides an organized way for the firm’s management and associates to exchange views and perspectives.
DGS offers the following benefits to our attorneys: Medical, Dental, Vision, Short-Term Disability, Long-Term Disability, Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment, Pre-Tax Transportation Program, Flexible Spending Account, Employee Assistance Program, Identity Theft, Pet Insurance, and Retirement Plan. The firm also offers competitive paid sick leave, vacation, and parental leave. In addition, DGS offers benefits specific to individual attorneys, including a bonus program, clerkship bonuses, Colorado bar review course and bar examination fees for any attorney who is not admitted to practice in Colorado, annual Colorado attorney registration fees, bar memberships, continuing legal education allowance, and a multitude of professional development opportunities through in-house presentations, skills training, coaching, and retreats.
Mentors are a critical asset to guide and support an attorney's career. Associates are paired with a formal partner mentor as soon as they begin at the firm. These relationships develop through regular meetings and working together on various professional development initiatives, including goal setting and career action plans to achieve the mentee's goals for the stated year. In addition, individual and group events are planned throughout the year to encourage opportunities for social interaction and networking. The firm also has several affinity groups which promote and provide informal and formal mentoring relationships.
The firm provides project-based feedback evaluations for associates on a monthly basis. These evaluations aid with day-to-day feedback by ensuring that each associate receives regular assessments of their work, including identification of strengths and suggestions for development. In addition, the evaluation reports provide the firm with valuable information regarding the progress and needs of individual attorneys, which is used in arranging future assignments and legal education programs. The evaluation sessions also provide an opportunity to review individual career development issues, assignments, and attorney concerns about any aspect of life at the firm.
The firm hosts a mountain retreat for attorneys every other year to provide opportunities for knowledge sharing, social interaction, and strategic planning purposes.
We offer training on the skills our attorneys need to be successful in everyday practice – focused both on the specific legal work they do and the soft skills it takes to earn and retain clients. Each of our departments run differentiated training programs that target the skills most necessary for their particular practice. Additionally, the DGS Professional Development Department offers training to each of our three associate levels (junior, mid-level, and senior). These trainings are designed to aid in the development of associates for where they are in their careers. Examples of training topics include how to effectively give and receive feedback, public speaking, client communications, marketing, and business development skills.
